Internet Identity collaborates with Microsoft to help protect customers from new phishing attacks with up to the hour protection

New data agreement allows Internet Identity to help thwart phishing attacks against its clients by providing data to Microsoft® Phishing Filter and SmartScreen™ Technology to help protect Windows® Internet Explorer 7, MSN® Search Toolbar, MSN Hotmail® and Windows Live™ Mail Beta users.

Tacoma, WA—November 17, 2005—Internet Identity™ announced today a formal data provider agreement with Microsoft that helps deliver up to the hour protection from phishing attacks to Microsoft customers.   The arrangement allows Internet Identity to provide rapid protection for the customers of its corporate clients when they are targeted by a phishing attack.

Internet Identity automatically detects and takes reports for phishing websites for a wide range of clients – from the largest banks and on-line services to the smallest credit unions. Whenever Internet Identity confirms that a particular URL leads to a phishing site attacking a customer, it immediately forwards the information to the Microsoft Phishing Filter’s URL reputation service.  This service is available in the upcoming version of Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista, as well as to users of current Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XPSP2 who have installed the new Microsoft Phishing Filter add-in for MSN Search Toolbar. The Microsoft Phishing Filter will use this information to help warn or in the case of confirmed phishing sites restrict users from sharing their sensitive information. The data provider arrangement will also enable Microsoft to extend protection to even more customers by using this data within Microsoft’s SmartScreen Technology for email filtering to help protect MSN Hotmail and Windows Live Mail users from phishing scams in email.

“We are excited to be working with Internet Identity as a valuable addition to our phishing data providers,” said John Scarrow, General Manager, Anti-Spam and Anti-Phishing Team at Microsoft Corp. “Their strong experience and the quality of care they give to help ensure the integrity and accuracy of the phishing data they provide will allow us to better protect our customers from a wide range of phishing attacks.”

Internet Identity is immediately adding the Microsoft Phishing Filter reporting service at no additional charge to all its site deactivation services.  The company is also introducing a low-cost service option for companies that want to have phishing sites immediately included in the Microsoft Phishing Filter and other similar services. With the Anti-Phishing Working Group reporting that the average phishing website still lasts nearly five days, the immediate blocking of phishing sites at the user level is a major advance in the fight against phishing.

“Our partnership with Microsoft is a huge win for our customers,” said Rod Rasmussen, Director of Operations for Internet Identity. “With its reach, the Microsoft Phishing Filter will help provide the definitive method to quickly render phishing sites ineffective.”

The arrangement expands Internet Identity’s growing arsenal of counter-measures that immediately mitigate harm caused by phishing attacks.  This new service gives clients a quick-hitting tool to take down phishing sites without having to engage in potentially illegal tactics such as denial of service attacks. As with the revolutionary Domain Threat Index™ that provides pre-launch data on phishing sites being constructed, Internet Identity continues to lead the field in innovative approaches to find and fight on-line fraud.
